Refugees
Who are refugees?
Refugees are individuals who have been granted protection or refugee status in the UK after fleeing persecution, conflict, or violence in their home countries.
Challenges refugees face
Many refugees continue to experience significant barriers even after being granted protection, including:
- Trauma-related conditions: anxiety, depression, and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) caused by persecution, conflict, and dangerous journeys.
- Skills and qualifications: foreign qualifications often go unrecognised, and the lack of professional networks hinders employment prospects.
- Cultural and language barriers: difficulties in communication and cultural adaptation slow down social integration.
- Homelessness and poor living conditions: challenges in accessing healthcare, housing, and other essential services.
- Economic inequality: concentration in low-wage, low-skill sectors increases vulnerability to exploitation and prevents stable employment and housing.
How Wiltshire Refugee Network supports refugees
We help refugees unlock their potential and integrate into UK society through tailored support, including:
- Education and healthcare access: assistance with school enrolment and GP registration.
- Benefits and immigration support: guidance with mainstream benefits applications and referrals for immigration advice (family reunion, Travel Documents, eVisas).
- Employment support: coaching, interview preparation, CV and cover letter writing to remove barriers to work.
- Negotiated support packages: working with external agencies to meet individual needs.
- Holistic risk and needs assessment: preparing a Personal Integration Plan to facilitate community integration.
- Community connections: liaising with organisations and services offering additional support, such as social services, language classes, and volunteering opportunities.
